The Most Successful Leaders Are in the Value Creation Business. Are You?

For the formative years of my career, I thought I was being paid to do my job, to sell advertising. As I moved up the ladder I had bigger titles, bigger teams, and bigger responsibility. And yet the moments that truly shifted outcomes had almost nothing to do with the title on my business card. The real shift came when I stopped thinking about what I was doing and started asking what I was there to create. That single reorientation changed everything.

We are all in the same game. No matter the industry, the sector, or the size of the organisation - leadership ultimately plays out in one arena: value creation. The market doesn't reward effort, activity, or expertise in isolation. It rewards impact. Full stop.

The question being quietly asked by boards, by clients and by teams is always: What gets better because you are here? The most successful leaders I see make one decisive shift: they stop anchoring their identity to function and start orienting around what they create.

They don't lead marketing, operations, or sales. They create growth, efficiency, and opportunity through those disciplines. That's not a semantic difference; it's a strategic one. And once that shift happens, growth stops being something to chase and starts becoming something that follows and flows.

Value is rarely what you think it is. In reality, no client was ever buying inventory or a billboard. They want business growth. They were buying value creation. The product was just the vehicle. The moment we stopped talking about what we sold and started articulating what it enabled - growth, trust, pricing power, partnerships - everything else moved.

Leadership doesn't create impact by managing activity. It creates impact by setting a vision, building a strategy, and executing relentlessly in service of value creation. The worth of any product or service lives not in what it is, but in what it does; in how it improves the world for the person receiving it.

What I find in my coaching work is that leaders almost always create more value than they ever articulate. The gap isn't capability, it's awareness. The ones who accelerate fastest learn to describe themselves in terms of change: what shifts when they're involved, what improves because of their presence, what would be absent without them.

The question isn't whether you create value. You do. The question is whether you understand the value you create - and whether the people who matter can see it clearly enough to trust you, follow you, and invest in you. That's the quiet advantage the most successful leaders share.
