How Do You Make Decisions with AI?

Last month I wrote an article about how the most successful leaders are using AI in the right places and that successful leadership in our AI era comes down to three things: Vision. Execution. Judgement. This got me thinking about judgment…and how we make decisions, especially in an AI enhanced world.

We are all getting smarter, faster. With AI at our fingertips, we all now have better data, better analysis, better recommendations than ever before. And yet the quality of your decisions isn't improving at the same rate.

Because the bottleneck was never information. It was always judgement. And judgement isn't something AI gives you. It's something you build.

The leaders I work with who consistently make great decisions don't just rely on data. They combine three things: Pattern recognition built over years. Emotional awareness in the moment. The courage to act before certainty arrives.

AI can accelerate the first. It can surface patterns, run scenarios, and model outcomes faster than any human team. But pattern recognition alone isn't decision-making. It's preparation.

The second - emotional awareness - is where most leaders underinvest. The ability to notice what you're feeling while making a decision, and to distinguish between fear, intuition and bias, is the difference between reactive leadership and intentional leadership.

The third - courage - is the most underrated leadership capability of all. Every significant decision involves acting with incomplete information. AI can reduce the uncertainty, but it can't eliminate it. At some point, you have to decide.

The best leaders I've worked with treat decisions like a craft. They build rituals around them. They create space to think. They seek out disagreement before committing. They separate the decision from the outcome.

In a world where AI gives everyone the same information advantage, the leaders who win will be the ones who develop superior judgement - the human capability that no algorithm can replicate.
